COM Surrogate Object (dllhost.exe) Causes Very High CPU/RAM utilization After Installing Pivotal Business Server (PBS)

Overview

After installing the Pivotal Business Server (PBS), you notice that COM Surrogate (dllhost.exe) is utilizing almost 99-100% of CPU/Memory at intermittent periods. These utilization spikes occur even when there are no active users on the system and can be typically resolved by shutting down Pivotal Business Server in Component Services. You'd like to know the potential root cause of this behavior.

Task Manager may display utilization similar to the following:

Information

In the past, these issues have been caused by multiple ScheduledScript services (from the Pivotal toolkit) that are nearly identical, running concurrently and also at the same interval. This causes processing issues with the NotificationSubscriptionService server task, and with the SQL queries underlying that task, resulting in memory leaks with the Pivotal Business Server (PBS) COM object.
